What is a Gold Star Family Member?

“A wife, husband, mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, parent through adoption, foster parents who stand or stood in loco parentis, children, stepchildren, children through adoption, brothers, sisters, half brothers, half-sisters, aunts, uncles, grandchildren and grandparents of a member of the Armed Forces of the United States that sacrificed their lives for our way of life and the American flag under which they served.”

A Gold Star family is the title that is reserved for families of military members who have died in the line of duty. It is meant to honor the service member’s ultimate sacrifice while acknowledging their family’s loss, grief, and continued healing.

The organization dates back to WWI when military families displayed service flags featuring a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the Armed Forces. Individual military family members who lost a loved one also started to be referred to as “Gold Star Wives,” “Gold Star Mothers,” and so on.

From concept to reality

The projects currently include the creation and implementation of Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments throughout the country. Soon there will be one of these Monuments in each State of the US. The original monument was established at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, in Dunbar, WV in 2013. Later, a second Gold Star Families Memorial Monument was dedicated on September 21, 2014 in Valley Forge, PA

In the last few years, Picture This On Granite has helped design, build and install a fourth and fifth Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in Tampa, FL, and Fairfield, OH. Both have been officially unveiled during Memorial Day weekend 2015.

We are proud to associate ourselves with this organization that brings together grieving military families, but also promotes the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Through granite military memorial monuments, we hope to pay a vibrant tribute to the fallen and their families.
