On September 11, 13 years after the 9/11 Attacks, about 75 people turned out for the official dedication of the new 9/11 Memorial located at the entrance to the park and across from the All Veterans Memorial Park.

The memorial was the idea of Township Councilman Ray Perkins, a Vietnam veteran. He said he was in New York City when the towers were hit during the 9/11 Attacks.

“No one knew what was happening or where we would be attacked next,” Perkins said. “We were scared.”

The centerpiece of the memorial is a six by four feet by eight-inch-thick piece of polished black granite. It is laser etched with images from the terrorist targets, including the Pentagon, Twin Towers and the field in Shanksville, Pa., where United Flight 93 was forced down by passengers after it was hijacked by terrorists. It is believed the hijackers had planned to fly the plane into the Capitol.

The block is on a semicircular platform engraved with the logos of the police department, Budd Lake Fire Department, Budd Lake First Aid and Rescue Squad and the Flanders Fire and Rescue Squad.

The stone was laser etched and engraved by “Picture This In Granite,” a firm in Stanstead, near Quebec, about a half mile from the Vermont border. The company has developed many similar memorials around the country.

Township employees excavated the area at the entrance to the park while Garden State Lawns of Flanders built the block wall around the memorial. Flanders Valley Monument in Hackettstown created the base.
