For more than a century, Farmington’s residents have talked about a Memorial to honor the community’s veterans. On Sept. 7, the city will officially have a Veterans Memorial.
The site at Rambling River Park has already taken on the look of a Veterans Memorial. With a granite flag in the center of the monument, granite benches, hundreds of pavers engraved with the names of area veterans and the triangular top of the Memorial engraved with six stars built by Picture This On Granite, the only thing left to do to make it a memorial is raise the flag of the United States of America.
Young men and women have long answered the nation’s call to serve in the military, to protect the freedoms that we take for granted each day.
It is so very appropriate that we never forget their sacrifice. There are national and state memorials, but nothing brings an awareness of those sacrifices home to us, like a local Veterans Memorial that we can see each day and remember the human sacrifices that have been made for us by our own young people and their families from the Farmington area.
“This memorial is to honor all Farmington area men & women veterans of U.S. military service – past, present and future.”
There will be music in the park 45 minutes prior to the dedication, and a reception will follow at Farmington Lutheran Church. The ceremony will also include a reading of the names of 15 Farmington men who were killed in service in wartime. Their names are engraved on two separate granite stones on the memorial. As the names are read, one of two active military members, in full dress, will hold a hand on each veterans’ name being read. A bell will be rung for each of the 15 men. The whole community is welcome to witness the event.
