CNC Water Jet cut PGHD® Laser Etched Black Granite Plaques
From Concept to Reality
The dedication of the new Freedom Fighters Gateway, a monument built at the corner of Roberson Street and Rosemary Street, was attended by many community members. A wall was constructed using locally sourced stone, featuring fifteen inset panels, PGHD Laser Etched with images of members of the Northside neighborhood that fought for civil rights in the 1960s.
“That gateway is way for people entering the community to know about the incredible history of this community and this neighborhood,” Barrett said. “It’s a history that people should know; it’s a history that’s important to Chapel Hill.”“The gateway offers what one local, civil rights leader called ‘a beautiful glimpse’ into the Freedom Movement,” the Northside neighborhoods’ Marian Cheek Jackson Center says. “It is meant to let people know – loud and clear – that they have entered a unique community of people who have struggled for freedom their whole lives and to inspire similar determination,” the center says. “As lifetime Northside resident Clementine Self said: ‘The battle is not over. We have not yet overcome.’”- Courtesy of The Herald Sun-Staff reporters
